It was a magical and fascinating experience meeting a local beekeeper and finding out about our pollinator friends the Honey Bee. The local hive enclosure I visited also provides a meaningful, quiet and contemplative setting for people - children and adults alike.
However, pollinators face many pressures which have led to declines in numbers, and a reduction in the diversity of species to be found in many parts of the country.
I am a strong believer in being proactive and there are a plethora of actions we can all take to both protect and enhance the environment as well as provide enough homes and public infrastructure for future generations.
To start with 5 simple actions that anyone can take to help pollinators:
- Grow more flowers, shrubs and trees.
- Let patches of land grow wild.
- Cut grass less often.
- Do not disturb insect nests and hibernation spots.
- Think carefully about whether to use pesticides.
