Buses are the most popular form of public transport so keeping bus fares down will be of great benefit, linking communities and preventing isolation.
That is why Sherrie was pleased to hear that the Government are extending the ‘Get Around for £2’ scheme all the way to December 2024. The scheme forms part of the Government's wider Help for Households initiative and aims to help passengers with travel costs for work, education, shopping and medical treatments over the winter months while they are facing pressures from the rising cost of living.
Over 140 bus operators outside of London now charge no more than £2 for their single tickets across over 5,000 routes. This has been made possible by redirecting HS2 funding as part of Network North, taking total government investment to keeping bus fares down to nearly £600 million.
Commenting, Sherrie adds, ''It’s worth noting, the Conservatives £2 bus fare cap has helped the cost of bus fares fall across England outside London by 7.4 per cent, whereas in Labour-run London, bus fares have increased. This needs to change, people travelling throughout London deserve a fairer deal''
