Today the Government announced the long term plan for housing.
We need more homes, but where we build them is important and what counts.
That is why new planning freedoms announced today will support building and regeneration in inner cities, with a focus on brown field development.
Here are some of the key actions:
- Investing £550 million to drive densification and deliver much needed infrastructure, like transport and community facilities, unlocking tens of thousands new homes.
- Making our planning system more flexible, supporting development around existing urban centres and business hubs.
- Empowering millions more homeowners to extend their homes upwards and outwards, allowing families to expand their home as their family grows.
- Investing £24 million to bust the planning backlog and injecting an extra £65 million into planning departments, to speed up planning decisions and the delivery of new homes.
- Cutting red tape and making it easier to turn agricultural buildings into homes, delivering on our promise to rural communities.
- Exploring measures to drive densification and regeneration in our inner cities, whilst protecting gardens and the character of suburban neighbourhoods.
- Preventing Labour councils from blocking brownfield first policy, making sure the right homes are built in the right places.
Sherrie commented, ‘’I remember the special feeling I had when we moved into our new home! However, for many, especially younger generations, owning your own home doesn’t feel within reach. This is why it makes total sense for our Government to focus getting more homes built and in the right places. Places like the centre of cities like London and Leeds. Unlike the uncontrolled sprawl Labour supports.
The Conservatives have delivered over 2.2 million more homes since 2010 and supported millions more into home ownership. This Parliament alone, has delivered the highest number of new homes in over three decades. This long term plan for housing builds on Conservatives strong record of delivery and will help get the economy quickly and sustainably growing again, while supporting more young families to take their first steps onto the housing ladder.’’
