Conservatives are committed to protecting and improving water quality across England.
Sherrie was pleased to hear the Government’s announcement this week that through the Water Restoration Fund, up to £11 million in water company fines will be directly reinvested into schemes to improve our waterways.
This is part of the Plan for Water, where the Government is investing around £1.6 billion to reduce sewage discharges, reduce nutrient pollution, and increase the supply of water. It was also announced that powers would be strengthened, including those of regulators, to hold water companies and other responsible parties to account. This includes changes to the law to increase the maximum amount for penalties that the Environment Agency can issue against a company that damages the environment.
Commenting, Sherrie said ‘’ This is positive news and a very proactive approach to help tackle this important issue. It is right that water quality is a top priority for our Government.
''In my role as a borough Cllr, where we have two main waterways running through my ward, I know how important it is to residents and nature to protect all forms of waterways. I have always worked hard to ensure the lines of communication are kept open between local water companies and the Council, to help keep our river clear and companies are held to account.
''I am proud that under the Conservatives, this is the first Government in history to take such comprehensive action to improve water quality across England, by tackling storm overflows, protecting our public health and the environment from discharges and driving forward more investment, stronger regulation, and tougher enforcement.’’
